The awards season is coming to close, but not before the biggest awards of the year are given, the Oscars (named so after Margaret Herrick an Academy Liberian said that the statue looked like her Uncle Oscar). So after much thought and reflection I have made my Oscar predictions. For the full list of nominations go to http://www.oscars.org/awards/academyawards/83/nominees.html and watch the Academy Awards show Sunday, Feb. 27 at 5 pm on ABC.
Best Picture- “The King’s Speech”
After going back and forth from “The Social Network” and “The King’s Speech” I decided on “The King’s Speech”. My reasoning is that the obvious choice is “The Social Network” because it won just about every award but the BAFTA and I wanted to go against the grain. Also I enjoyed watching “The King’s Speech” more than “The Social Network”. However I won’t be disappointed or surprised if “The Social Network” wins.
Best Actor- Colin Firth “The King’s Speech”
His emotion and his flawless portrayal of a stuttering king is worthy of winning an Oscar.
Best Actress- Natalie Portman “The Black Sawn”
Aside from the fact that she’s won every other award, her strong performance carries the film.
Best Supporting Actor- Christian Bale “The Fighter”
Once again he’s won just about every other award and his dedication to the role, going so far as to change his appearance usually wins people the gold.
Best Supporting Actress- Melissa Leo “The Fighter”
Again, winning almost every other award makes Leo a solid choice for the Oscar.
Best Director- Tom Hopper “The King’s Speech”
The Director’s Guild gave Hopper the award and directors can tell good directing probably better than anyone (although I wouldn’t be surprised if David Fincher won).
Best Original Screenplay- David Seidler “The King’s Speech”
“The King’s Speech” will probably win, but “Inception” is the one that should, because I feel that “Inception” was the most original story this past year.
Best Adapted Screenplay- Aaron Sorkin “The Social Network”
Everything was perfect, characters, story, dialogue.
Best Animated Film- “Toy Story 3”
I don’t think I need to explain myself
Best Foreign Language Film- “Biutiful”
Best Cinematography- “True Grit”
Best Editing- “The Social Network”
Best Art Direction- “Inception”
Best Costume Design- “Alice in Wonderland”
Best Make-up- “The Wolfman”
Best Score- “The Social Network”
Best Song- “If I Rise” “127 Hours”
Best Sound Mixing- “Inception”
Best Sound Editing- “Inception”
Best Visual Effects- “Inception”
Best Documentary Feature- “Restrepo”
Best Documentary Short Subject- “The Warriors of Quigang”
Best Animated Short- “Day for Night”
Best Short Film- “Wish 143”
